    April 22, 1970: The first earth day was celebrated. Founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day was created to focus on environmental concerns and problems. The Earth Day environmental movement brought about such achievements as the Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Toxic Substances Control Act.
